One realisation for those building a home recording studio: there are so many choices. It may seem easier to pay Noel Gallagher from Oasis to do the work.

The second most startling realisation is that you'll pay through the nose for some of the gear. One AKG microphone can cost a few thousand pounds, and audio mixing boards are horrendously expensive.

Fortunately, if you already have a high-powered PC (or know how to build one) with a dual-core processor and plenty of RAM, you already own a potential recording studio.

The inputs are there, plenty of software apps provide the necessary recording and mixing tools, and you can burn a CD or upload it to your favourite indie music store with ease.

Interestingly, music production is already PC-centric. Even the most high-end setups rely on apps such as Digi Design Pro Tools and Cubase. Creating audio loops, programming complex drum patterns, tweaking EQ settings in a final mixdown – these functions are all 'performed' behind an LCD.

The good news: you can easily patch together a fairly powerful music studio rig for hardly any cost, if you know which applications to use and have some technical know-how.

One example: Ardour for Linux and Mac OSX systems is free to download and use (although they ask for a small donation), but has high-end digital audio workstation features, such as VST plug-in support for adding instrument libraries and a non-linear audio editor for creating multi-track recordings.

Free audio tools are not crippled in any way; in fact, some of the best audio apps, such as Audacity and Fluid Synth are better than the commercial alternatives. So what are you waiting for? Noel Gallagher is a busy guy and that top-ten metalcore (or bagpipe-punk fusion) hit is just a mouse click away.

You can become an audio god in just a few simple steps: download these apps, setup your PC recording studio, break out that Fender Strat, belt out a few notes, and start dreaming of opening for Snow Patrol – or at least the pure enjoyment of working with powerful music applications, pumping out some mad tunes, and getting more bang out of your PC.

To become the next John Lennon clone, you'll need a powerful and fairly recent computer. Now, you might be surprised to learn the system doesn't need to be the absolute latest rig with an Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM.

You can use (or build) any dual-core system that boasts about 4GB of RAM. You won't want to use an older computer with a single-core operating system, because the latest apps do take advantage of dual-core processing and the hyperthreading techniques, and benefit greatly from the faster clock rates in the most recent processors.

Most PCs also have plenty of mass storage for multi-track recording. In fact, you may want to downgrade to an earlier operating system (say, Microsoft Vista or even XP) because many audio apps have not released Windows 7 drivers yet.

Now, most of the audio latency that occurs in recordings – eg., the slight delay between the sounds you are generating with an instrument and how the clip is recorded – has more to do with the external hardware you use.

Any recent PC sound card is more than adequate for working with loops and drum patterns, but to record, for instance, vocals and acoustic guitar, you'll need an audio interface such as the Cakewalk UA-1G which has -inch connections for guitar and microphone, as well as handy input and output volume controls.

The way of the DAW

Okay, you've built or borrowed a recent system with a sound card. You also have a way to record instruments with an audio interface. Now to record your next opus, you'll need digital audio workstation (DAW) software, which are essentially the heart and soul of the music studio. Any loops, drums, samples or tracks you create will be assembled in the workstation.

Reaper

The best DAW we have found is called Reaper, because it's powerful enough to record and mix a real song, one that you'll be proud to share with the world. Reaper is free to download and test, but the company suggests donating just £30 if you use it regularly.

The interface is highly intuitive: to add a track, you just right-click on the main screen and select 'Insert New Track'. There are VCR controls for recording analogue instruments, such as guitar and vocals.

Because the program supports VST, if you do purchase a commercial product such as Native Instruments Guitar Rig 4 that tool will appear from within Reaper so you can use the wide array of effects.

Ardour, which is only available on Linux and Mac, is another powerful DAW we highly recommend. One of the greatest strengths of this recording tool is its stability. The app hasn't gone down once in testing under Ubuntu Studio and has some pro-level features, such as unlimited undo for track effects. This means, if you record a new guitar lick and start tweaking the sound, adding a delay or distortion, you can undo all the changes back to the original track.

Ardour also lets you create unlimited audio tracks, although you'll find the program will slow down considerably if you add more than about 16 tracks.

Note by note

Rosegarden is a stark departure from both Reaper and Ardour. Instead of recording analogue tracks to create a full band sound (think: The Killers), this free application for Linux lets you create songs note by note.

In the editing window, you can click away to create notes where you want them. Then, you can build up the entire song, change keys and tempo, and view the notations. You can then print sheet music or even publish your song through a service such as BMI.

Audacity is another good recording tool for a home studio. Essentially, this venerable workhorse lets you edit the actual sound waveform (for example, for trimming out background noise), convert from one format to another (helpful if you find a loop in a different format from the one supported by your recording software), and even change the speed or pitch of the recording.

Fortunately, even though it sounds technical, Audacity provides a visual and easy-to-understand interface for editing audio clips.

One reason to use Audacity: if you have recorded the perfect drum section or guitar solo and then realised the clip has some extra hiss or audio artefacts, you can export the track as a WAV file from your recording software and then use Audacity to see those mistakes up close and remove them as needed.

A music studio isn't necessarily just for musicians who want to record instruments and put them together into a finished song. For those who have never learned an instrument, you can still create your own music, using loop libraries and beat samples you can download from the Internet, then assemble them into a complete song.

A PC audio workstation that uses free software is a good fit for the amateur composer or enthusiast, who may not want to spend huge amounts of money (or any at all) on their hobby but still wants to produce quality music.

A good place to start is at the Freesound Project offers hundreds of free loops and sound samples. You can download a huge selection under the Creative Commons licence, which means you can use any of its audio samples you want as long as you do not sell the finished song.

Freesound has a wide assortment of loops and samples, some of them strange (aliens chirping off in the distance) and even bewildering (one loop is nothing but an alarm repeating over and over), but the key here is that you can download a sample and then tweak it using Audacity or digital audio workstation software, such as Reaper.

For example, you may want to mess around with that odd alarm sound, but by lowering the pitch or changing it to a slow tempo, it can suddenly sound more like a bass part.

Beatmatch is another free collection of music, but one that's intended more for rappers and DJs, who are looking to add repeating drum loops and synth parts that work well for certain types of music, such as dance, house and techno music.

Beatmatch offers complete libraries, all of them that are free to use, so you can mix and match loops together, find several clips that are similar (eg., a loop that uses the same synth sound, but repeats at a different rate), and to inspire you to write new material.

Beatmatch also offers only high-quality AIFF and WAV samples, which is extremely helpful, since when you add these tones to your new song you won't have to put up with any distortion or hiss.

Philharmonia is another free loop compendium, but one that consists mainly of orchestral sound samples instead of the typical beat samples and drum loops. In Philharmonia, you can find, for example, a viola or woodwind sound that you can load into Rosegarden or Reaper and create a MIDI track.

Free-Loops.com and Sound Transit also offer a wide assortment of loops and samples for free, many of them without any licensing restrictions at all.

The desired effect

It's easy to download loops and samples, and import them into your digital audio workstation software, and create a final song you can upload to MySpace or some other online repository. For those who do not play an instrument, but want to do more than just mix 'n' match existing loops, you can use free audio software to actually create original audio tracks even if you do not play a single instrument.

FluidSynth, which is primarily a Linux tool and provides a powerful virtual synthesizer you can use to create original loops. For those proficient with source code and Linux, you can download the FluidSynth code and create your own application.

Z-Maestro

A shortcut, though, is to use one of the applications that already incorporates the FluidSynth code, such as Qsynth or Z-Maestro. These apps incorporate the virtual synth into the program so you can create fantastic sounds, such as a cascading bleep or a simple piano roll.

For those who want to skip all the hip-hop loops and beat-box emulators, Sonoma Wire Works T4 is a straight-up guitar-recording program that provides a wealth of guitar amp and virtual guitar pedals for creating distortions, delays and other axe-related effects.

The free software goes the extra step of showing you a virtual representation of the amp and pedal to help you get a visual clue as to how the effect will change your tone: for example, grungy and heavy or more like a light chorus.

This application also provides a simple DAW interface for adding guitar tracks and matching them with drum loops, and you can share your final songs with other Sonoma Wire Works users.

A drum machine can help you form the basis for a song as you layer other instruments and audio clips into a complete composition. One application for creating drums is called Hydrogen and it supports both Linux and Windows.

Hydrogen

The main strength of this program is that it's easy to get to grips with so you can get a beat down quickly. Creating drum patterns can be a laborious process that doesn't seem that creative. With Hydrogen, you just click on a graph for each drum sound, click the 'Play' button, and you'll hear the drum pattern.

When you have programmed the drums the way you want, you can export the drum loop as a WAV or MIDI file. Want to go completely space-age and mimic the strangest indie bands around? (We're not sure if The Knife or Animal Collective use this tool, but they should).

Gnaural

Gnaural is a tone generator that works under Windows and Linux. It's quite unlike any other sound generator, in that you start with a basic droning audio clip and tweak the audio properties, repeat patterns, pitch and tempo.

It's a way to create a highly unique sound all your own, without relying on an original loop and trying to tweak the audio.

Putting it all together

Once you have the core components in place – the PC itself, the audio interface, DAW, loop libraries and sound generators – it's time to think a bit more globally.

For a home studio, you should think about where to do the recordings. Pick a quiet place in your home where you can lock the door and tune out the world. Also, you'll need enough space for all of the cables, microphones, instruments, keyboards, and extra gear for recording.

Another consideration is that you will need access to extra disk space – such as a network attached storage drive or a portable hard disk drive – because each track in the recording process can consume disk space quickly, and you will likely want to create versions of your songs, make backups, and re-use audio clips from other songs.

You'll need space for all your loop libraries and drum loops as well. And, for the most part, you will want to keep your main system clean of any extra data that could possibly slow down your hard drive You can also expand your current hardware once you have a basic DAW in place.

For example, Roland makes the V-Drums TD-4SX set that connects straight up to your PC and allows you to record real drums. This can dramatically improve the quality of a recording, because the drum sounds take on a more analogue, live-performance feel as opposed to the more programmed drum approach most people will recognise.

Upgrading to a condenser microphone, such as those made by Audio Technica or Neumann, can also significantly improve the overall quality of your computer recordings. In the end, recording is an excellent waste of time – even if you can't tell a tuning knob from a guitar pick.

With a wide array of free recording software, loop libraries that are just a few clicks away and extra tools for creating your own loops, anyone can become an audio deity.

Every year, the latest Macs get faster and faster. But do we? No matter how many teraflops it can flip, your computer's ability to save you time and effort depends on you finding your way around its features and functions.

Even if there's nothing you don't know how to do, it's knowing the quickest and simplest way to do it that divides the true power user from the person who's still trying to get that coffee they promised themselves before they started that job that was going to take them five minutes.

Unlike certain other operating systems, of course, the Mac OS has a habit of making it pretty obvious what buttons you need to push. But its very ease of use can lead even seasoned users into competence complacency.

Okay, so you've sprinted up that gently sloping learning curve and are sunning yourself on the lush plateau of computing confidence. Take a peek just ahead of you, though. What's that twinkling through the undergrowth, a few short steps out of reach? Yes – it's efficiency nirvana: the place where you can relax because everything takes a little bit less time than you expected.

The following tips don't delve into uncharted territory or unearth strange artefacts from the bowels of the operating system. They just shed new light on familiar everyday tasks, revealing secrets and shortcuts to smooth your journey.

Follow our map, take note of the pitfalls, and we'll see you safely from 'to do' to 'done' in time for elevenses.

01. Customise your toolbars

Don't: Think keyboard shortcuts are the only way to speed up your work.

Do: Customise the toolbars in Finder and Apple apps such as Mail and Safari.

Go to View > Customize Toolbar, then drag the icons for your favourite features into position. Its almost like programming your own app (without the coffee-stained Grateful Dead T-shirt).

02. Jump to Finder locations

Don't: Mouse around your Mac to get to key system locations.

Do: Use keystrokes in Finder to go straight to them. Holding Command+Shift, press A for Applications, C for Computer (overview of all storage), D for the Desktop, H for your Home folder (the one with your name on it inside the Users folder), I for your iDisk (if you use MobileMe), K to browse your local network, or U for Utilities.

03. Take a Quick Look

Don't: Open files in an application when you just want to check their content.

Do: Use Mac OS X's Quick Look. Select any text, image or PDF file in Finder and press Command+Y to preview it in a pop-up window. Add the Option key for a full-screen slideshow; this works with multiple selections including different file formats. Use the cursor keys to scroll up and down within documents and move between files, and press Esc when you're finished.

04. Keep your favourites in the sidebar

Don't: Navigate manually to your favourite folders every time.

Do: Use the sidebar at the left of every Finder window. If you don't see it, press Option+Shift+T. Drag any folder onto the area under Places to keep it here. You're only dragging a shortcut: the folder itself doesn't move. If you want to remove it from the sidebar, you can drag it off without affecting the content.

05. Navigate Finder

Don't: Chase files and folders round Finder with your mouse.

Do: Learn the key shortcuts to browse efficiently. Press Command+N in Finder for a new window, and set its view mode to icons, list, columns or Cover Flow by pressing Command with 1, 2, 3 or 4.

In List view, click any column heading to sort by that criterion. Pressing tab will cycle through them in alphabetical order. Move up and down the list with the cursor arrow keys; with a folder highlighted, press ' to see its contents or ' to close it again.

In any view, press Shift+Command+N to create a new folder in the current location. To check where the current folder is, either Command+click its name in the window title bar or look at the path bar at the foot of the window, activated via View > Show Path Bar.

06. Accelerate your mouse

Don't: Dawdle around the screen.

Do: Use the Keyboard & Mouse pane of System Preferences to increase tracking and scrolling speeds. With todays big screens and high resolutions, you may need maximum tracking to get from left to right without falling off your mouse mat.

Thanks to the accuracy of modern mice, you should still have fine enough control. Faster scrolling also saves fingerache in websites, text documents and your Inbox.

07. Print from Finder

Don't: Waste precious time printing off a folder of documents one by one.

Do: In Finder, select all the files you want to print (use Shift or Command to select multiple items). Then go to File > Print. Each document will open in its associated application and output using its Print command with its existing or default print settings.

08. Set file associations

Don't: Put up with documents constantly opening in the wrong application when double-clicked.

Do: Tell Mac OS X which app to use. For example, should text files open in Word or TextEdit? To choose, right-click a file and choose Open With, then pick an app from the list. If you want to make your choice apply to all files of this kind in future, select the file and press Command+I (Get Info).

Under Open With, choose an app, then click Change All. If you can't get a file to open in a particular app, try launching the app first, then press Command+O and browse to the file.

09. Work with multiple items

Don't: Perform actions on multiple items individually when you can do them all at the same time.

Do: In Finder, you can select multiple folders by Command+clicking, then expand them all to reveal their contents by pressing the right cursor key (and left to close them again). Or select multiple files in the same way and press Command+O, or drag them all onto an application icon in the Dock, to open them all at once.

Note that in icon view you can Shift-click to select items that aren't next to each other; in List view you do this with Command, while Shift selects every file between the first and second you click.

In many cases you can also open multiple files from within an app by using File > Open (or Command+O) and then Shift or Command-clicking within the Open dialog box.

10. Make your own shortcuts

Don't: Curse the lack of keystrokes for your favourite commands.

Do: Create your own. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts. At the top of the list are various ready-made combos for Mac OS X functions, which you can edit by clicking in the Shortcut column or disable by unticking.

Below, there's a section for applications; it's empty by default, but click the + button and you can add a shortcut for almost any menu option in any app. Select the app from the drop-down list, or leave it on All Applications for elusive commands such as those in the Services menu.

The name of the option isn't confirmed as you type it, so after clicking in the Key Shortcut box and pressing your desired combo you'll need to go and check that it works.

11. Tidy up your login items

Don't: Wait for a random selection of applications to load every time you restart your Mac.

Login items

Do: Go to System Preferences > Accounts, make sure your account is highlighted on the left, and click the Login Items tab on the right.

This lists the apps that will launch automatically when you start up or log in. Ticked items load without displaying anything, while unticked items will be seen during the startup process and may leave windows open.

You can remove an item from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus button below. Don't get rid of anything that other software may rely on – such as iTunes Helper, or Microsoft Database if you're running Office – but feel free to kill products like Skype if you don't use them regularly.

On the other hand, you might be able to save time and effort by auto-running additional apps you do use every day, such as Mail and iPhoto. Click the plus sign, press Shift-Command+A in the file browser to go into Applications, and pick the apps you want (remember you can select more than one by holding Command).

12. Quick and calculating

Don't: Fire up the calculator app just to do quick sums.

Do: Get answers even faster with Spotlight. Press Command+[Spacebar], then type, for example, '59/365*100' to discover that your MobileMe subscription is costing you 16p a day. You don't even have to press = or Return, as the answer will appear instantly below.

To start a new calculation, press tab. If you find you do need the more advanced features of Calculator, just start typing its name and press Return when it appears as the Top Hit.

13. Tell Spotlight where to go

Don't: Let Spotlight waste its time… and yours.

Do: Tell Spotlight what to show first and where not to look. In System Preferences > Spotlight, click the Search Results tab and drag the categories – Documents, Contacts, Movies and so on – to dictate the order in which items will appear. Untick any categories you dont want.

For example, you may find Mail messages clutter your results, and prefer to search those within Mail. In the Privacy tab, click + and select any drives or folders that you want Spotlight not to bother searching – an external drive full of media that you manage in iTunes, perhaps.

14. Finders keepers

Don't: Search repeatedly for the same thing.

Do: Save your searches. Press Command+F in any Finder window to bring up the search options and enter your terms.

Having found the files that meet your criteria, click Save, at the top right, to store your search as a Smart Folder, listed under Search for at the foot of the sidebar to the left of every Finder window.In future, just click this to re-find all files (including any new additions) that meet the same criteria.

For example, search for Contents | Contains [the name of a work project] plus Last modified date | is | within last |7| days to find everything you've done on the project in the last week with one click.

There are also Smart Folders in Mail to categorise messages without moving them out of your Inbox.

15. Drag and dance

Don't: Fiddle around arranging your windows next to each other just so you can drag items between them.

Do: Use Application Switcher or Exposé while dragging. Start in the app that contains the item you want to drag, or in Finder if it's a file. Click on the item with the left mouse button and hold down, ready to drag it.

With your other hand, press Command+Tab to switch to the application where you want to drop the item. If you get to the right app but the wrong document window is on top, press Command+' (same key as the tilde symbol [~]) to switch windows. Or drag to a screen corner you've set up to activate Exposé, then continue dragging onto a window.

16. Let Spotlight do the work

Don't: Hunt around your Mac for the app or file you want.

Do: Use Spotlight. Hit Command+[spacebar] to open Spotlight, then type all or part of what you're looking for, whether it's a filename, text, email or contact.

Results appear below; press Return to open the Top Hit, or use the cursor keys to move through the list. Press Command+Return to open the folder containing the item rather than launching the item itself.

17. Search, don't scroll

Don't: Scroll through an enormous list in Finder to find what you want within a crowded folder.

Do: With the folder open, type what you're looking for into the search box at the top-right of the window (press Command+F to go to this). In the bar below, click on the folder name instead of This Mac to limit the search to this location.

18. Reveal windows with Expose

Don't: Lose track of windows among all the open applications.

Do: Use Exposé to find windows quickly. This Mac OS X feature has three functions: to show all the open windows side by side, to show only the windows belonging to the application that's currently in front, and to clear all the windows out of the way while you look at the Desktop.

You can set how Exposé is activated in the Exposé and Spaces pane of System Preferences. Click the Exposé tab and you'll see which corners of the screen do what when the mouse is moved there; use the drop-down menus to change this.

Below, you can also alter the key shortcuts. Note that modern Mac keyboards use the function keys for specific tasks, such as adjusting volume, so F10, F11 and F12, for example, will only work if you hold Fn too (or tick the option in the Keyboard tab of the Keyboard & Mouse pane).

The best choice is F3, which is labelled for the job: press it to see all windows, or with Ctrl for the current app's windows, or with Command to reveal the Desktop.

19. Switch between apps

Don't: Go through the Dock or Spotlight to switch to an app that's already running.

Do: Hold the Command key and press Tab to bring up the Application Switcher, which shows the icons of all the currently running apps in a translucent bar across the middle of the screen. (Windows users will recognise this as the equivalent of Option+Tab.)

Keep holding Command while pressing Tab to move between these icons. Stop on the one you want and release the Command key.

Or to hide an app that's getting in the way, press H (still holding Command) while its icon is highlighted here. Pressing Command+Tab is also a quick way to check which apps are running.

20. Switch between windows

Don't: Drag windows around looking for the one you want underneath.

Do: Use window switching. Use Exposé (see previous tip), or press Command+' (the same key bearing the tilde [~] symbol) to cycle through the windows open in the current app; add Shift to cycle back in reverse order.

21. Find within web pages

Don't: Fail to find content you've already found.

Find

Do: Go straight to it with Safari's Find function. How annoying is it when you search the web for something, then click a page in the results and can't find the thing you were searching for in the page? With a few extra keystrokes, this need never happen.

After typing a word or phrase into the Google box at the top-right of the Safari window (or into any online search engine), hit Command+A followed by Command+C before pressing Return.

Once you've clicked through to a result, press Command+F followed by Command+V to highlight all instances of the phrase on the page. Step through them by pressing Return.

22. Search Safari

Don't: Scroll through your history and bookmarks to track down previously viewed web pages.

Do: Search Safari by pressing Shift+Command+/ (think of it as Command+[?]) to go to the Help box and then typing what you want. This will search all the page titles in your history and bookmarks.

If you want to search the content of pages, use Spotlight; to search only within Safari rather than your whole system, go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari (add this location to your Finder sidebar for quick access) and search within this.

23. Use the address field

Don't: Search the net for a site you already know the name of.

Do: Go straight to it. Apparently we're all so accustomed to using the search box that we type into it even when we already know what site we want to go to.

It's quicker to type the name of a site, such as 'youtube', straight into the address field, without bothering to add 'www' or '.com'. Nine times out of ten it'll work.

24. Copy to Google

Don't: Go everywhere to find out more about something you read on the web.

Do: Select text within a website in Safari, right-click and choose Search with Google to do exactly that. Also, when you right-click an item such as an Address Book contact, you'll get the option to search for its name in Spotlight.

25. Pass it on

Don't: Bother messing around with copy and paste to tell someone else about the web page you're looking at.

Do: Press Shift+Command+I in Safari to create a new Mail message with the URL of the current page already in the body. (We're still waiting for an equivalent for Twitter.)

26. Tame your tabs

Don't: Get your Safari windows in a twist.

Do: Master tabbed browsing. Command+click a link to open it in a new tab. Add Option if you prefer a new window (you can reverse these combinations in Preferences > Tabs).

Add Shift to switch to the new tab (or window) at the same time. Press Command+T to start a new tab; its default content is set in Preferences > General.

If you have several windows open, consolidate them into tabs within a single window using Window > Merge All Windows.

27. Prepare PDFs in Preview

Don't: Resort to Adobe Acrobat Professional to extract or rearrange PDFs.

Do: Use Preview's sidebar. When you open a PDF, this lists thumbnails of all the pages (you can show or hide it using Shift+Command+D).

Click a thumbnail – or use Shift or Command to select several – and press Command+C, then Command+N to make a new PDF containing just this. You can also drag pages from one PDF's sidebar to another.

28. Befriend your bookmarks

Don't: Let cumbersome controls scupper your bookmarks.

Do: Use simple shortcuts. Safari's handling of bookmarks can be clumsy, but they're too useful to ignore. To create a quick bookmark, press Shift+Command+D (not Command+D) to add the current URL to the Bookmarks menu without having to choose where to put it.

Cover flow

You can organise them later in the Cover Flow view. Press Option+Command+B to switch to this, and the same to go back to the page you were browsing; or, Option+Command+click the Bookmarks icon at the left of the Bookmarks bar to open this view in a new window.

For easier access, go to Safari > Preferences > General and set New tabs open with to Bookmarks; then you can always view your bookmarks by pressing Command+T.

29. Fly through forms

Don't: Plod through the same personal details in every web form.

Do: Take advantage of Safari's auto-complete abilities. As you type into a field that matches one you've filled in before, such as First name or Email, Safari should guess what you're going to type; just press Tab to accept it.

To fill a whole form instantly, press Shift+Command+A. You should only need to add a few bits and bobs to finish the job.

30. Find your way back

Don't: Use the Back button to find your way back through search results.

Do: Use tabs or a clever new Snow Leopard feature. When clicking a link in a page of results, hold Command to open it in a new tab; then you can click back on the first tab (or use Shift+Command+') to go back to the results page.

But Snow Leopard has a better trick: when you search with the Google box at the top right of Safari's window, click through to one of the pages found – the cross button at the right of the box turns into an orange arrow, which you can click to go back to the results page.

31. Stay vertical

Don't: Struggle to copy or reformat a column (rather than a continuous line) of text.

Do: Hold the Option key while you drag to select. This works in both TextEdit and Word to select everything within a vertical strip of your document, whether separated by tabs or spaces.

32. Snip and save

Don't: Copy and paste to save a bit of text for later.

Do: Use Mac OS X's shortcuts. In TextEdit (and other Cocoa apps, but not Word), select text and use Shift+Command+Y to turn it into a note in the Stickies app (not to be confused with the Stickies widget).

Or go to TextEdit > Services > TextEdit > New Window Containing Selection.

33. Grab and go

Don't: Spend time exporting graphics, websites or other work in formats suitable for showing to colleagues or clients.

Do: Use screen grabs. With whatever you're creating visible onscreen (turn off any grids, guides and other clutter in your software), press Ctrl+Command+Shift+4 to show a crosshair, then drag this around your work to copy it to the Clipboard.

Switch to Mail, create a new message to your intended recipient, click in the body of the message and paste the grab (Ctrl+V).

34. Take out the garbage

Don't: Strip unwanted characters manually out of text from emails, websites or non-native file formats.

Do: Take advantage of Mac OS Xs built-in reformatting tools. In TextEdit – or other Cocoa text editors, but not Word – select your text and go to TextEdit > Services > Format > Reformat (or press Command+Shift+7) to strip out characters.

You'll find more options in this submenu. However, do note that it's not smart enough to spot where multiple line breaks should be left as a paragraph break, but it's quicker for you to put the breaks back in than take the line ends out.

35. Look it up

Don't: Go to Google or a dictionary site to look up words and their meanings.

Do: Use Mac OS X's built-in dictionary. On the application menu, click Services to reveal tools that work in most Cocoa apps including iLife and iWork. Select some text and pick Look Up In Dictionary. This opens a dictionary entry in a window with a search box, as well as a Thesaurus button.

Or press Ctrl+Command+D for a neater dictionary. (Remember TextEdits spellchecker is also available in Edit > Spelling and Grammar.)

36. Don't count old messages

Don't: Waste time checking for unread emails.

Do: Mark old messages as read. The Mail icon in the Dock shows how many unread items you have, which is absolutely fine if you read everything as it arrives, but otherwise will constantly reflect several hundred messages you've glanced at and ignored.

One solution is to start each day by reading any relevant mail, then press Option+Shift+Down arrow to select all messages below and Shift+Command+U to mark them as read. Then when the icon shows mail you'll know it's new.

37. Copy colour corrections

Don't: Waste time making the same adjustment to many photos.

Colour corrections

Do: Copy and paste adjustments. Whatever's wrong with one photo, such as dodgy exposure or an unwanted colour cast, is likely to be wrong with others taken at the same time.

When using the Adjust palette in iPhoto's Edit mode to correct the first of your snaps, notice the Copy button at the bottom right. After setting the sliders to suit, click Copy.

Now move onto the next picture and, with the Adjust palette still open, click Paste. The same settings are applied. Tweak if necessary: the original adjustments will still be applied the next time you click Paste.

38. Date your snaps

Don't: Stare at screens full of photos with meaningless filenames.

Do: Rename them all with a couple of clicks. By default, the image titles shown in iPhoto (press Shift+Command+T if you're not seeing any) are the filenames created by your camera, typically something like 'IMG_0123'.

This conveys no information; it would be much handier to name them with the date taken, avoiding the need to look this up elsewhere. Select any number of pictures, right-click and choose Batch Change (or press Shift+Command+B), then choose Set | Title | to | Date/Time.

You even get to choose the date format – although, because of the geeks that we are, ideally we'd have liked an alphabetically sortable Year/ Month/Day option…

39. Squash and send

Don't: Manually resize images before emailing them.

Do: Use Mail's built-in resize options. When you attach an image to a message, an Image Size pop-up menu appears at the bottom right of the window. Choose Actual Size, Large, Medium or Small.

The latter options reduce pics to around 1280x800, 640x400 or 320x200 pixels respectively (your mileage may vary depending on your camera's aspect ratio). The only caveat is that Mail isn't the most efficient when it comes to minimising file size.

For even smaller uploads, select images in iPhoto and use Share > Email to set the desired reduction, then click Compose Message to attach them to a new email.

40. File your mail

Don't: Clog your Inbox with mailing list fodder.


Mail rules

Do: Use Mail Rules to sort messages. In Mail, first click any email from a regular sender. What you need is the sender's name, as displayed in the From column.

Mail won't let you select this directly, so you need a cheat: press Shift+Command+F to forward the message, select and copy (Command+C) the name after From: in the body of the new email (without the address in angle brackets), then press Command+W to close without saving.

Now go to Mailbox > New Mailbox and press Command+V to name the new mailbox. Click OK, then go to Mail > Preferences > Rules and click Add Rule, Set From | Contains, then click in the text box to the right and press Command+V to enter the senders name.

Below, set Move Message | to mailbox: and use the menu to select your new mailbox. Click OK, and in the future all messages from this source will stack up in this folder instead of in your Inbox.

Wireless networks are a wonderful invention. They give us the ability to easily deploy a complex network of computers without the need to physically wire them up.

However, this ease of use can also mean that, without proper precautions, neighbourhood parasites can leech bandwidth and generally use your network against your wishes. Trapping such people is easy with a little thought and some borrowed equipment.

What is wireless?

What's usually known as Wi-Fi belongs to a family of wireless networking technologies called IEE 802.11. These all use the same protocol for transmitting and receiving data over short distances.

Home wireless routers and hubs (commonly called wireless access points) conform to the 802.11g variant of the specification. This uses transmission frequencies centred on 2.4GHz. Each transmission channel gives a raw data throughput of either 54 or 65 Mbps, depending on your equipment.

However, the useful data transmission rate is more like 19 Mbps, with the rest of the available bandwidth being used for error correction, encryption and packet collision detection.

Wireless LANs operate on one of 13 channels. If you're getting low data transfer rates, it's worth switching your wireless access point to a different channel – the chances are that another network in the neighbourhood is using the same one. Using the same channel won't cause data leakage onto other networks, because each is also uniquely identified and should feature strong encryption.

Encrypt to survive

Encryption is vital for wireless networks. There are two main standards in popular use. The first, which is older and decidedly less secure, is Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).

The original idea behind WEP was that it would be as secure as using a wired network. However, it's been widely known for around half a decade that if you can capture enough data packets from a secure connection, WEP encryption can be cracked using freely available hacking tools.

After cracking WEP encryption on a target network, it's possible for a hacker to read the login credentials required to connect to that network. After that, he will discover and exploit whatever vulnerabilities can be found on the network to consolidate his hold over it, possibly by deploying a keylogger to snatch identities, as well as using your computers for the storage of files he doesn't want on his own network.

The core aim is to leech your bandwidth to download undesirable content. For this reason, WEP should no longer be used. In its place, your wireless network should support WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access).

This features far stronger encryption and the tools used to crack it are still either at the proof-of-concept stage or take so long to run that updating your passwords regularly will mean that your wireless network remains a very slippery target indeed.

If your network still uses WEP, stop reading immediately, log into your wireless access point's web interface, go to the admin page and select WPA (or, if available, the stronger variant WPA2) and save the configuration. Now disconnect and reconnect your computers to the network and they'll begin using the stronger encryption.

That done, let's now explore your neighbourhood.

Network discovery

The first thing a hacker will do when scouting for Wi-Fi targets is check the networks in range to find the best one to attack. While you could simply use your PC's Wi-Fi connectivity software to discover local networks, there are better tools available online that will show you far more.

One such tool is the free Inssider from MetaGeek. Installation on a computer with a wireless network card is as simple as running the installation package and clicking 'Next' a couple of times.

Inssider

You don't need to be a member of a wireless network to run Inssider. Run it and select your wireless network interface from the dropdown list at the top of the Inssider window. Click the 'Start Scanning' button and the interface will begin to fill with networks.

At the top of the screen is a table containing a line for each network that the program discovers. This contains information including the wireless access point device each network uses, the name (called the SSID) of the network, the signal strength and the type of security used.

In the lower section of the interface are real-time graphs showing the signal strengths of each network as they change over time. Water in the atmosphere absorbs radio waves, so if the weather's bad, signal strengths may be lower than on a bright, dry day. Such fluctuations in atmospheric interference will cause networks on the edge of the detectable range to occasionally pop up and disappear again.

On the right-hand pane is a chart showing the signal strengths as the height of a set of bell curves centred on the channels used. If you're not getting very good bandwidth, try changing the access point's channel to one that isn't in use by the networks around you, then reconnect.

As a general guide, the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) column in the table is a useful measure of the distance between you and each network's base station. This can be used to get a rough idea of whose networks you can see if they've not been identifiable from their SSID.

The SSID is the 'service set ID'. This is the user-defined name of the network. When you buy a new wireless access point, the SSID will usually be set to a default. If you leave this as it is, it gives people a good indication that little if any configuration or security work has been done. If the network is also using WEP encryption (or worse, no encryption at all), it is open to easy abuse.

Inssider gives you a great way to see what Wi-Fi networks are in your neighbourhood. However, if you find a network that has no protection at all, don't be tempted to join it and leech bandwidth.

It may well be that an incompetent neighbour has set it up and doesn't realise that it's open to abuse, but it may equally have been set up like that deliberately. It's possible that someone may have set up a data collection utility such as Wireshark on the open network. If you connect to the network, the person who owns it will be able to see everything you do.

Catching a Wi-Fi hacker

So let's turn the tables. Let's use this technique to set a trap for anyone in the vicinity who may fancy exploring networks and leeching bandwidth that doesn't belong to them. You can also use this technique to monitor traffic on your own networks in general.

We're going to use what's known as a honeypot – a PC or network that appears unprotected. They're designed to tempt hackers and malware to explore and infect them. In reality, they're heavily monitored.

Researchers use them to detect new strains of malware, and we're going to use a honeypot wireless network to catch bandwidth leeches. The technique involves setting up a wireless network without any protection and then monitoring it for unauthorised connections.

The network is physically isolated, but anyone joining it illegally won't know that. It just looks like a juicy connection waiting to be exploited.

To set up a simple wireless honeypot, you first need a spare wireless access point for potential hackers and freeloaders to attempt to access. This is plugged into an old network hub.

The hub is important because whatever traffic it receives on one port, it automatically retransmits on all the others. This doesn't happen in a network switch, which is why we need a hub. We can plug a PC running a traffic-monitoring program into another port on the hub, begin collecting data and wait for the fun to begin.

The monitoring program we'll use is Wireshark. This app is used by network security professionals the world over and is very easy to set up and use.

Setting the trap

Go to www.wireshark.org and download the latest Windows version. This is compatible with all supported versions of Windows from XP onwards. Installation is a simple matter of running the downloaded executable and accepting the defaults.

WireShark

Unlike Linux, Windows doesn't have the ability to put its network card into 'promiscuous' mode automatically (whereby it will accept all traffic, thus allowing Wireshark to monitor whatever flows past). To enable this, part of the Wireshark installation procedure will install a library called WinPcap.

Once installed, run Wireshark and select your wired network interface card from the interface list. This begins a collection session. You should start to see traffic being sent every few seconds by the wireless access point as it monitors and discovers resources, and finds out what machine has which IP address. You'll also see traffic from the PC on which Wireshark is running.

On the monitoring PC, log into the wireless access point's web-based management page and set security to 'none'. If there's a function for returning it to its factory settings, run this to reset all passwords.

Now test your handiwork by joining the network wirelessly from another PC. On the joining computer, open a command line and enter the command ipconfig/all.

Find the wireless network card's details in the morass of information that appears. Make a note of its IP address. If you now click the source or destination columns in Wireshark to sort the incoming information, you can easily find the traffic being generated by this IP address.

The traffic reveals a surprising amount of detail, including the machine's name and its MAC address. If, while monitoring, you find other computers joining the network, their machine's Windows name, MAC address and current IP address will be recorded by Wireshark.

If you picked up another PC, the owner was obviously scanning the neighbourhood looking for new networks to join. Why not have a little fun by letting him know you're on to him?

Try changing the name of the network to his PC's name or some other piece of identifying information, and crank the security up to WPA2 so he won't be able to do anything about it. Doing so may scare him sufficiently to leave you well alone in future.

When something goes wrong with QuickBooks, the consequences can be pretty dire. Luckily, many common problems are easy to fix — once you know about them.


QuickBooks is a crucial tool for businesses. It helps organizations manage their money, pay their employees, and pay their bills. But QuickBooks is also a fairly complex application. This complexity means that QuickBooks is prone to having problems.

I do a lot of work on QuickBooks and have gathered some of the common issues I deal with almost daily. These tips may help you solve those issues before you lose your hair or your money.

1: Updating the data file fails

This can be very tricky. When you are upgrading QuickBooks from one version to the next, sometimes the earlier version’s data file can’t be read by the newer version. Because of this, the data file must be updated. Usually this will happen during the installation process and will require you make a backup first. However, to avoid any issues with the data file, make sure you run a verification on that file before you uninstall the old version or install the new version. Better yet, install the new version side by side with the old version so you will always have a fallback.

2: Rebuilding the data file fails

Sometimes, that verified data still will not upgrade to the newer version. In this case, you will have to go back to the older version and do a rebuild of your data. For some users, this is an easy task. But when dealing with the file that holds the keys to the company’s financial kingdom, others will hesitate. If you do find yourself in a situation where you have to rebuild the data, do it in this order: Back up your data file, verify your data file, rebuild your data file. If the rebuild simply won’t work, you might want to make sure that data file is located on the local machine. QuickBooks is insistent that the data file be located on the C:\ drive. That means even if your data file is on the Q:\ drive (and that Q drive is on the local machine but shared, so QuickBooks THINKS it’s on a different drive), QuickBooks could have an issue with the rebuild. So before the rebuild, copy the data file to the C:\ drive, do the rebuild, and move the data file back where you need it.

3: You lose the connection to the data file

This is probably the most common issue, as well as the most challenging to troubleshoot. QuickBooks is finicky about the network connection to the data file. If there is the slightest hiccup in the network, your connection can be lost. If you’re sure QuickBooks is set up correctly, you might want to use the QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic Tool to help you figure out what’s going wrong. Also, make sure your firewall and your antivirus are allowing the connection through.

4: The reinstall fails

If you need to reinstall QuickBooks, there is a little something you might not hear about from Intuit: The clean uninstall. Before you do your reinstall, go ahead and uninstall using the standard Windows uninstall methods — but then go back and delete the C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooksXXX directory (where XXX is the release number), as well as the C:\Windows\Users\Documents And Settings\Program Data\Intuit\QuickBooksXXX directories (again, where XXX is the release number). As with any time you are dealing with QuickBooks, BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST!

5: QuickBooks run slowly in multi-user mode

This one is tricky because there can be a number of issues (as with any slowdown). If you have ruled out hardware, you might be facing issues in your data file. The fastest route to solving this is to use the Clean Up Company Data tool found in File | Utilities. If this doesn’t give you much of a speed boost, you can always turn off the Audit Trail feature.

6: QuickBooks client machine can’t locate the data file on the server

The first thing to do here is to make sure that the Server Manager is installed on the server machine and that it’s running. If that doesn’t work, map the drive to the server from the client and try to connect that way. Most likely, if you can see the server from the client, the issue is that the Server Manager is not running.

7: You can’t find the licensing information

If you’ve lost your documentation and can’t find your license/product numbers, you can always locate them by hitting either [F2] or [Ctrl]1 when QuickBooks is open (and you’re logged into your data file). But you can’t find your validation code. If you have to reinstall, you’ll have to re-register (unless you wrote that validation code down… HINT HINT!).

8: A new printer won’t print

This one is simple but still flummoxes users all the time:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Search for the file qbprint.qbp.
  3. Rename qbprint.qbp to qbprint.qbp.old.
  4. Restart QuickBooks and printing should work.

9: You’ve lost the admin password

Shame on you for losing your admin password. It does happen, though. Or maybe you’re a new administrator coming into a tricky situation where the old admin didn’t leave the password. Fear not; you can recover that password by using the QuickBooks Automated Password Reset Tool. It’s not 100 percent foolproof, but it works most times.

10: You can’t copy or move the QuickBooks data file

Have you ever tried to copy that QuickBooks data file from your hard drive to a removable drive (for backup or migration purposes), only to find out the file is locked? This is a simple one. QuickBooks Server Manager and Directory Monitor have that file locked down. Close out QuickBooks, click Start | Run, enter services.msc, look for the QuickBooks services, and stop those two. Once the services are stopped, you should be able to copy and paste that file.

This shouldn't be a big surprise: people act the same on social networks as they do in real life.

Think of it like walking in the door of a big party with the friend of a friend of a friend. Facebook, Twitter, Ning communities, and those people at the house party all exhibit the same general rules of social interaction.

Those first few parties as gawky, pubescent kids were hard. And since there's no finishing school on the internet, let's run back to Mama to see what advice she has to offer.

Personality matters

There you are, standing by the pool. Mama says: 'Are you wearing the right clothes? Are you smiling? First impressions are pretty important.' A quick scan around the room reveals that some people are more popular than others. So let's take a look at some of the people you don't want to be:

1. The Wallflower

This person might have something interesting to offer – but doesn't. He or she is likely to go home alone and unnoticed.

They think: 'I'm here, I just wish someone would talk to me. I'm really interesting if you get to know me.'

Mama says: 'Just because you're at the party doesn't mean you'll make friends. You have to jump in there and say something.'

Creating a Facebook fan page or Twitter account is just walking into the room. You're going to have to engage with others if you want to develop relationships.

Next time you hear, 'Everyone's doing social; so should we,' consider: do we have valuable content worth sharing? Do we have the resources to share it regularly, to monitor brand mentions, and to respond to them?

If the answer to each is 'yes,' then say something, and start a conversation.

2. The Loudmouth

This one overcompensates for a lack of anything valuable to say with sheer volume. He constantly demands attention.

Mama says: 'Don't be a blabbermouth. Learn to listen.' Self-serving social behaviour will always fail. Businesses and individuals that shout non-stop about themselves miss the point of online community.

Remember, you're mixed in with friends and family in your fan's feeds. The people with whom you're sharing already have a real relationship with your consumer.

3. The Flashy One

This one sparkles. People gather, confident they're near the centre of the party. But they soon discover how inaccessible, intimidating, and generally vapid this person really is.

You see this a lot online: a new website, new social push, everything's flashy and exciting. However, often the honeymoon ends because not enough thought has been put into maintaining the relationship.

Mama says: 'Beauty is only skin deep: it's what's inside that counts.'

Make the relationship go past the surface by offering up real value in the form of advice and resources. After you gain the trust of a few, others will come flocking.

4. The Poseur

Blathering on with buzzwords and name-dropping like crazy, this one is the know-nothing who thinks they know it all …

Mama says: 'Just be yourself.' Your voice is the biggest reflection of your brand, so be genuine. You'll avoid a lot of embarrassment and flack if you just go with what you know. These are just four of the types that generally are not successful in social situations. You can easily think of others.

MODERN APPROACH: Modernista.com ties together its brand where it exists on the web for a unique web experience

So what's the secret to being popular? According to Mama, it's simple: 'Treat people the way they want to be treated.' Think about relationships you've had in the past, both good and bad.

I'm sure you'll agree that a healthy relationship involves a whole lot of back and forth, growing and changing, listening and listening, and listening some more. Your online relationships needs to be engaged in the same way. It's not a campaign – it's a commitment.

Respond quickly

Comcast, a cable company in the US, is notorious for frustrating customers with bad service. That's why customer service manager Frank Eliason started reaching out to disgruntled customers publicly via Twitter (@ComcastCares). Frank monitors all the tweets relating to Comcast and follows up complaints as quickly as possible.

Often, once-angry customers respond with appreciation. They enjoy the instant gratification they receive from the simple gesture of acknowledgement. It doesn't take a huge effort on Frank's part, but it goes a long way in protecting the brand.

Starbucks

And Frank does all this out in the open for everyone to see. Transparency builds trust. Let your audience see the man behind the curtain. Listen to your audience and speak to individual posts and people directly. Share and retweet the best from your audience. Face it: they're more interesting than you.

Be adventurous

Don't be afraid to get outside yourself and try something different. Pepsi scrapped its Super Bowl ad in order to support the 'Get Fresh' project – www.refresheverything.com/30days. The plan was to provide $1.3million to people, businesses and non-profits with ideas that will make a positive impact.

The audience was invited to submit ideas, vote on their favourites, and win money. The campaign has continued to gather online press after many Super Bowl ads have been forgotten.

Pepsi has benefited from embracing the idea that the audience has something more interesting to say than it does.

Know your audience

Make sure you know who you're talking to before you open your mouth. Each type of person requires a different approach.

A restaurant chain recently began a social push on Twitter. An assessment was made that its audience was 'young and urban'. Slang and acronyms (LOL, OMG, etc) were used as support.

Before long, the audience lashed back viciously. Many were offended in thinking the business saw them as uneducated teenagers. And while some of the audience might indeed talk like that online, they didn't want to be pigeon holed in a category perceived as unprofessional and immature.

Importantly, after receiving the bad feedback, the company acknowledged the mistake. They apologised. And they fixed it. Now their Twitter account is gaining the followers they want. So, welcome to the party.

Remember the basics of human nature and social interaction and soon, you won't be just another face at the party. You'll be throwing your own. Mama will be so proud.

Both the 640-802 CCNA exam and the Network+ exam test for some of the common knowledge of the OSI Model.

For the CCNA 640-802 exam this information is tested as part of the 'Describe how a network works' domain as part of the following subtopics:

  • Use the OSI and TCP/IP models and their associated protocols to explain how data flows in a network
  • Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the OSI and TCP models
  • Select the components required to meet a network specification

Beyond these subtopics you'll need to have at least a general understanding of the model across some of the other exam topics as well but this is the primary area of focus.

For the Network+ exam most of this relates to subtopic  4.1 Explain the function of each layer of the OSI model.

For both certification exams you'll need to know where in the model certain protocols function as well as knowing at what layers hardware devices such as routers, switches, bridges, et cetera work. Additionally, you'll need to have a good understanding of how security of data is handled through the devices and what security features are offered to the data in transit and at which levels of the OSI model offer what types of security.

The Seven Layers of the OSI Model

In summary the four layers of the OSI model are broken as follows:

The Physical Layer defines the electrical and physical properties and the operating specifications for the devices and media in use. The main job of the Physical Layer is the physical 'connection' or attachment of given media and how it is configured (e.g. Token Ring cable, size of cable used, termination in place etc.). In some instances, there may be secondary responsibilities of this layer depending on the device for things such as flow control, modulation/demodulation and so forth. The protocol data unit in use at this level of the OSI model is referred to as a 'bit.'

The Data Link Layer provides the practical means to transfer data between network nodes as its main job is to transfer data between network nodes in a wide area network or between nodes on the same local area network segment/subnet. It has the secondary responsibility to detect and correct errors (as permissible) that may take place at the Physical Layer. The protocol data unit in use at this level of the OSI model is referred to as a 'frame.'

The Network Layer handles the forwarding and routing of data along logical paths between network connected nodes. In addition to routing and forwarding functions of this layer of the model is also performs addressing, error handling, quality of service control, congestion control and packet sequencing. The protocol data unit in use at this level of the OSI model is referred to as a 'packet.'

The Transport Layer is responsible for the reliable, end to end transfer, recovery and flow control of the segments between the nodes. The protocol data unit in use at this level of the OSI model is referred to as a 'segment.'

The Session Layer addresses the build up and tear down of the connection sessions between nodes on a network. The protocol data unit in use at this level (and all of the subsequent levels) of the OSI model is referred to simply as 'data.'

The Presentation Layer is responsible for taking the data from applications at the application layer and breaking it down for use on the session layer as well as the reverse. It also has the task of formatting the data so that it can be sent to other nodes.

The Application Layer handles the initial connection of a given application to the network. It is where applications and application type activities such as browsing the web, sending and receiving email and performing file transfers take place. There are applications that wholly reside at the level such as Telnet and FTP.

Protocol Use at each of the TCP/IP Model Layers

At each layer of the OSI Model there are associated protocols that are in use.

These are not fully comprehensive lists but are examples of the more common protocols that are functioning at these different levels of the OSI Model.

At the Application layer you can find many but some of the more common ones include:

  • DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
  • FTP - File Transfer Protocol
  • HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol
  • IMAP - IMAP4, Internet Message Access Protocol (version 4)
  • LDAP - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
  • LPD - Line Printer Daemon Protocol
  • MIME (S-MIME) - Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and Secure MIME
  • NFS - Network File System
  • NNTP - Network News Transfer Protocol
  • NTP - Network Time Protocol
  • POP - POP3, Post Office Protocol (version 3)
  • RDP - Remote Desktop Protocol
  • RPC - Remote Procedure Call
  • SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
  • SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol
  • SNTP - Simple Network Time Protocol
  • SSH - Secure Shell
  • TELNET - Terminal Emulation Protocol of TCP/IP
  • TFTP - Trivial File Transfer Protocol

At the Presentation layer you can find these common protocols:

  • MIME - Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions
  • SSL - Secure Sockets Layer
  • TLS - Transport Layer Security
  • XDR - eXternal Data Representation

At the Session layer you can find socket driven connections and session establishment in Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).

You can also find Named Pipe sessions, a protocol in the Server Message Block (SMB) suite as well as the NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System) application Programming Interface (since NetBIOS is not formally a true networking protocol).

Session Announcement Protocol (SAP) is a protocol for broadcasting multicast session information and it is also found at the Session layer.

At the Transport layer you can find these common protocols:

  • SPX - Sequenced Packet Exchange
  • TCP - Transmission Control Protocol
  • UDP - User Datagram Protocol
  • SCTP - Stream Control Transmission Protocol

At the Network Layer you can find these common protocols:

  • ATP - AppleTalk Transaction Protocol
  • IPv4 - Internet Protocol v4
  • IPv6 - Internet Protocol v6
  • IPX - Internetwork Packet Exchange
  • ICMP - Internet Control Message Protocol
  • IGMP - Internet Group Management Protocol
  • OSPF - Open Shortest Path First

At the Data Link Layer you can find these common protocols:

  • PPP - Point-to-Point Protocol
  • PPTP - Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol
  • SLIP - Serial Line Internet Protocol
  • L2TP - Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol

Since the Physical Layer is really for defining the physical 'connection' or attachment of given media and how it is configured as well as the electrical and physical properties and the operating specifications for the devices and media in use there are no actual TCP/IP common protocols that are in use.

You can find certain combinations of media and standards at this layer such as RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232) which is the standard for data and control signals connecting between a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and a DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment) and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) which provides digital data transmission over local telephone lines.
