I was in the car for a while last night listening to NPR and heard a technology interview/story about a company called nPower. They are working to bring to production a product called the PEG. It's a 9 oz. aluminum tube with mechanics and circuitry inside that generate electricity as you walk. It has a USB port which in turn you plug into your electronic device and it charges your device as you walk or run.
You could readily throw it in your backpack and charge your phone/iPod/etc. to 80% from a dead state in about an hour worth of walking. You can also strap it to your leg if you're riding a bike and get the same effect.
Pretty neat stuff!
