iPhone prompting to Restore from Backup or Setup As New

So one of our executives has a fully functioning iPhone 4 that syncs to her personal laptop.  All of a sudden it's stuck in this mode where when connected to her computer or any other with iTunes (including 2 different Macs) it comes up as Setup As New or Restore from Backup.  After spending some time trying to construct the right search string, I stumbled upon this blog post.

It appears that a bit is triggered somewhere on the phone itself where it tells whatever computer it's connected to that it is in the mode to be restored or setup as new.  I tried resetting data, closing all applications, rebooting the phone, etc. and all to no avail.  Finally I followed the guidance on the aforementioned blog post and now I can connect and sync, backup, update, etc.  Below is the important bit that I did on this device and appears to have worked.

The Fix - Hard wire your iDevice to your computer with the sync cable. Eject any other iDevices wired or wireless. Select your device you wish to fix, choose restore from backup and set it off - now this is crucial - the timing must be right so be ready to pull then sync cable from the computer - it says calculating restore time - wait - as soon as it says restore in progress and iTunes on your computer starts to show a progress bar - pull the sync cable - iTunes may say restore complete or restore failed - no matter. Your iDevice will reboot - if you have a tethered boot you will need to hard reset into DFU and boot tethered. On reboot if all went well your device is just as it was, but now iTunes just shows the normal status screen and you can sync music and apps as before.
