In nearly all organizations the Help Desk is the one with the bad rap but they do most of the grunt work and initial diagnosis. It's rare to have good retention and many people look at it as the stepping stone to other IT jobs but if it's within your real of responsibility, you can certainly make it a better partner in the organization.
