For some reason Cyrus wouldn't work for me in the kitted, as-delivered form in SuSE 11.0 so I had to edit the /etc/imapd.conf file and add a couple of lines at the end (or anywhere for that matter) and then restart cyrus with 'rccyrus restart'
The lines to add:
allowplaintext: yes
sasl_mech_list: PLAIN
