Recently in setting up a new file server we encountered an error when trying to synchronize a user's server home directory to his laptop for offline use when we did a synchronization, the message in the sync window was 'Unable to make available offline for \\fileserver....\sharename. Access is denied'
It sounds like a permission issue but it's not an issue with the users's home directory or any of the contained files, it has instead to do with the parent folder's permissions. Here's the MS KB article.
Essentially, all users need to have read access to the root of the file share and that will fix the issue!
